GOODWOOD REVIVAL BETTER THAN EVER.
28/9/2009

The Goodwood Revival race meeting was held on th 18th to 20th of September 2009. As usual the "Magical Step back In Time"was just that . No vehicles manufactured after 1966 are allowed into the circuit gates, and spectators are encouraged to dress in period clothes of the years between 1948 when the circuit was opened for racing by the current Lord March's grandfather and 1966 when the circuit was closed to racing.
The circuit itself is the perimeter road of a world war two airfield and the airfield is still there and operating. The facilities are as they were in those days. For example the paddock has not changed a bit and spectators can view the cars from a meter or so away. The track is quite fast and the old cars get into some hairy looking slides through the corners. They are also driven in many cases by drivers who raced at goodwood in it's heydays. Stirling Moss was a regular winner and Mike Hawthorne made his name there. The main race of the weekend is the TT Celebration race for closed cockpit GT cars and the field is filled with AC Cobra's, Aston Martin's, Ferarri's including the one off 250 GT Breadvan.
The main saloon car race, a two part event with two drivers celebrated the mini which is 50 years old. Here the field was made up of 29 identical mini cooper S models and one Wolseley Hornet. These were driven by some of the drivers who raced them in the early 60's As expected there turned out to be a number of dices up and down the field with no body giving any quarter to anyone.
There are races for all types of cars that raced then including single seaters both front and rear engined, production sports cars, sports racing cars, motorcycles and the big banger sports racers like the Ford GT 40 and Lola t 70 spyder. The motorcycles are mainly Manx Nortons and Matchless G50'S with acouple of MV Agusta'S thrown in.
As befitting its world war two heritage there are Spitfire's and Mustang P51's at the airfield and they get to fly a few times each day of the meeting. A Lancaster bomber put in an apearance this year as did a Vulkan bomber on saturday and sunday.
All around the paddock the organisers have set up the Cafe's and resturants, shops and showrooms in period fashion and even recreated a small version of the Earls Court Motor Show with some amazing cars of the period.
Stirling Moss celebrated his 80th birthday the thursday before the event started and there were parades in his honour each day. The parades had nearly 80 of the cars that he raced in his career. Some of them were the actual cars he drove and others the same type.
A great event which seems to get better every year and one that lovers of old cars really should see at least once in their lives.

GOODWOOD REVIVAL IS ONLY 6 WEEKS AWAY.
13/8/2009

Spectators are encouraged to dress in period clothing from the 1950's and 1960's.This coupled with no modern cars allowed into the circuit area makes for an authentic atmosphere of the times when the Goodwood circuit was in full swing between 1948 and 1966.
The format every year is similar but not the same as the previous year.
It is 50 years since aSTON mARTIN won the world Sport Car Championship and the Lavant Cup race willbe a 1 hr. two driver race celebrating Aston Martin's winning the championship. Aston had eventually won Le mans after years of trying and found themselves leading the championship. The last race was at Goodwood and they had often won there. Moss took over the other car and drove an inspired race to win both the race and the championship.
The RAC Tuorist trophy is also a 1hr. two driver race and is the highlight of the weekend. This race brings out the closed cockpit GT cars between 1960 and 1964. These cars include Ferrari 250 GT and 250 GTO, 330 LMB's up against Shelby Cobra's and Shelby Daytona Coupe's lightweight E type Jaguars Aston Martin DB4GT Zagato's Corvettes and more. Driver's include Derek Bell, Richard Atwood, Jackie Oliver, Stirling Moss and many more from the magical years.
The Fordwater Trophy is for production based sports and GT crs in the spirit of the Members meetings held post war. Here almost forgotten cars auch as Lotus Elite, Alfa Giulia SZ, Elva, Ginneta and TVR's will be found.
The Freddie march Trophy is for cars raced in the 9hr. races between 1952 and 1955. Cars include Jag C type's Aston Martin DB3/S Ferrari 750 Allard and HWM.
The Witsun Trophy for Sports racing cars between 1963 and 1966 brings out the hairy chested big bangers like half a dozen Ford GT40's Lola T70 Spyder's Ferrari P2/3,McClaren M1C's and some more rare machines. It's a wonderfull sight and sound.
Well catered for are grand Prix cars with races including cars from 1930 to 1950. Out come the ERA's Bugatti's Alfa's and Maserati's. Also cars from 1950 to 1960. Think of Maserati 250F, Vanwall, Aston Martin, BRM, Coopers and a unique Ferguson 4 wheel drive.
There will be a race for front engined Formula Junior cars rounding out the weekend.
How can you miss all that.

There was overtaking aplenty and Rossi let off the brakes into the last corner to beat Lorenzo by a fraction of a second. Stoner was a distant third and could barely get off of his bike.

The Goodwood Revival Race Meeting will be held on the 18-20 September 2009. The meeting recreates the atmosphere of what going to a race meeting in the 1950s and the 1960s was all about. The mechanics and officials all dress in period clothing and the spectators are encouraged to do the same . It all adds to the atmosphere that makes it so wonderfull. The cars are all originals and are driven by many of the great drivers past and present. Most important of all is that the cars are really raced, they are not paraded around the circuit.

The events are by pre-booking only and they are both must see events. For tickets and information contact bookings@goodwood.co.uk.
